The California Senate has approved legislation to produce state-chartered cannabis banks to help California based marijuana businesses get around federal restrictions on access to banking. As part of the state legislation, private banks or credit unions apply for a restricted-objective state charter so they can accept deposits and provide services to licensed cannabis organizations. It is hoped this passage in the nation’s most populous state could put pressure on the U.S. Congress to federally legalize banking for the marijuana business.
